An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming day

2014-11-24_13-38-04

Severe thunderstorm outlook.

Remember that a severe thunderstorm is defined as a thunderstorm that produces 58 mph winds or higher, quarter size hail or larger, and/or a tornado.

Tuesday night:  Thunderstorms will come to an end.  A few strong evening storms are possible.

Wednesday into Thursday:  Severe weather is not anticipated.

Friday and Saturday:  Monitor updates.  Strong storms are possible.  Still a bit early to know the extent of the concerns.  Thus, monitor updates.

Sunday and Sunday night:  Severe weather is not anticipated.

Your day by day analysis

Tuesday night into Wednesday night:
Confidence:  High

Showers and storms will come to an end.  This will leave us with chilly temperatures.  Lows by Wednesday morning should dip into the 34 to 38 degree range over parts of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois.  Mostly in the 38 to 46 degree range, elsewhere.

Guidance has been all over the place with shower chances on Wednesday and Wednesday night.

I have removed rain chances, for the most part.  There is a very small chance for isolated light showers.

We should have a mix of sun and clouds Wednesday into Wednesday night.

Thursday and Thursday night:
Confidence:  Medium

Here is an interactive map from the March 9th tornadoes.  There may be some tornadoes that were missed and not included.

Link

http://www.weather.gov/pah/mar92017severereview

A weak system will pass through the region on Thursday.  This should spark a few scattered light showers.  I am not anticipating severe weather.  Perhaps a few showers.

Future-cast high resolution NAM model guidance shows a few showers (green areas).

This first image is for early Thursday morning

This next image is for 10 am on Thursday.  Still some time to monitor the rain chances.  This won’t be exact.  This is just a one model’s idea of where showers might be placed.

Friday into Saturday night:
Confidence:  Medium

The weather heads downhill as we approach the first half of the weekend.  A strong storm system is forecast to push out of the southwest United States.

An area of low pressure should track through Missouri on Saturday.  Showers and thunderstorms will accompany this system.  A few heavy storms are possible.  It is still a bit early to know whether severe weather is a concern.  Monitor updates, as always.

There remain some question on timing.  The bulk of the rain will likely hold off until late Friday night into Saturday evening.

If you have outdoor plans on Saturday then have a plan B.

Here is what the GFS model guidance is showing.  The red L is the area of low pressure.  We should be on the warm side of this system.

Green and yellow represent showers and thunderstorms.  Darker green is heavier rain.  Yellow is even heavier.

This is the weather map for 7 pm on Friday.  You can see the low over the Texas Panhandle moving northeast.

This next image is for 7 am on Saturday morning.  You can see a band of showers and storms moving into our local area.  The low continues to move east and northeast.

This next image is for 7 pm on Saturday.  Showers and storms in our local area.  You can see the low over western Missouri.  The low is moving northeast.

This next image is for 7 am on Sunday.  You can see the rain moving out of our local area.

I am not sure about severe weather with this event.  CAPE values appear low.  That could change.  Wind fields will be strong.

Monitor updates.

Another rain and storm event is possible as early as Monday/Tuesday.

Active pattern ahead of us.

The main concern, over the coming seven days, will be periodic chances for thunderstorms.  Spring is here and that means that we have to think about severe weather.  Forecasts can change.  Monitor updated information.  This is especially true on days where I mention the risk for strong or severe storms.

Don’t forget to utilize the interactive weather radars.  The city-view radars are sprinkled across the entire area.  Use them to track thunderstorms.  You will notice there are many options included in the city view radars.  Hail tracking, rotation tracking, clickable warnings, and more.

We have regional radars and local city radars – if a radar does not update then try another one. Occasional browsers need their cache cleared. You may also try restarting your browser. That usually fixes the problem. Occasionally we do have a radar go down. That is why I have duplicates. Thus, if one fails then try another one.

During the winter you can track snow and ice by clicking the winterize button on the local city view interactive radars.

There is a lot of noise on the internet.  A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation.  Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.

My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.

  • Communicate in simple terms
  • To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
  • Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, email, texts, and this blog
  • Minimize the “hype” that you might see on some television stations or through other weather sources
  • Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
