An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming day

  1.  Monday evening/night showers.  Some rumble of thunder.
  2. Cold blast of air arrives on Tuesday and Tuesday night.  Falling temperatures on Tuesday.
  3.  Snow chances later this week
  4.  The winter weather has been updated (2 PM Monday update)

Forecast analysis

Winter outlook has been posted and updated!

Updated on Monday afternoon.  I am tracking the mid to late week system next week.  Thus, the frequent updates.

The winter outlook can be found on the www.weathertalk.com website.  Sign into your account and click the Daily Weather Summary tab.  I have posted a link and a password behind that tab.

Monday night through Tuesday morning
Confidence:  High

Showers and thunderstorms moved into the region on Monday morning.  The coverage was not nearly as much as anticipated.  Late afternoon radar did show widespread showers and storms moving into the area from northeast Arkansas and western Tennessee.

Shower and thunderstorm chances will be with us into Monday night.  Activity will diminish late tonight into Tuesday morning.

Fog will continue to be an issue, as well.  Use care.

A cold front will sweep through the region on Tuesday morning and afternoon.

Check out these two temperature maps.

The first map is for Tuesday at 12 pm.  The second map is for Tuesday at 6 pm.

Temperatures will likely be falling from late morning into the afternoon hours.  Especially true for the western half of the region.

Tuesday evening

A few scattered showers are possible along the front on Tuesday.  Perhaps ending as a snow flurry or two on Tuesday night/Wednesday.  No accumulation anticipated.

Wind chills will be cold on Wednesday morning.

Our next weather system arrives on Thursday.

Here are the wind chill maps for Wednesday morning and evening.  Thursday morning, as well.  Time stamp at the top left of the image.

Wednesday 9 am

Wednesday 9 pm

Thursday 9 am

Thursday
Confidence:  Low

A weak system will pass through the region on Thursday.  The models have been struggling with this system for over a week.  Some models show a dusting to 1-2″ of snow.  Other models show flurries.  Other models show dry conditions for Thursday.

I will leave a chance for snow showers in the forecast.  If guidance begins to merge on a sensible solution then I will adjust the wording of the snow chances.

Thursday night through Sunday
Confidence:  Low

See the official winter weather outlook for the Thursday night through Sunday part of the forecast.

Winter storm forecasts will be posted on the www.weathertalk.com website.  Look under the Daily Weather Summary tab.  These are updated twice weekly.

Severe thunderstorm outlook.

Remember that a severe thunderstorm is defined as a thunderstorm that produces 58 mph winds or higher, quarter size hail or larger, and/or a tornado.

Monday afternoon/evening:  Monitor updates.  Small risk for severe weather.  Perhaps some hail in the stronger thunderstorms.  Overall the risk for severe weather remains small, but perhaps not zero.

Tuesday through Sunday:  Severe weather is not anticipated.

We have regional radars and local city radars – if a radar does not seem to be updating then try another one. Occasional browsers need their cache cleared. You may also try restarting your browser. That usually fixes the problem. Occasionally we do have a radar go down. That is why I have duplicates. Thus, if one fails then try another one.

If you have any problems then please send me an email beaudodson@usawx.com

Who do you trust for your weather information and who holds them accountable?I have studied weather in our region since the late 1970’s.  I have 38 years of experience in observing our region’s weather patterns.

I hold a Bachelor’s of Science in Geosciences with a concentration in Broadcast Meteorology.  I graduated from Mississippi State University.

My resume includes the following:

Member of the American Meteorological Society.

NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador.

Meteorologist for McCracken County Rescue Squad.  I served from 2005 through 2015
Meteorologist for the McCracken County Rescue Squad 2015-current

I am the owner and operator of Weather Talk (in partnership with The Fire Horn)

I own and operate the Southern Illinois Weather Observatory.

Recipient of the Mark Trail Award, WPSD Six Who Make A Difference Award, Kentucky Colonel, and the Caesar J. Fiamma” Award from the American Red Cross.

I am a recipient of the Mark Trail Award, WPSD Six Who Make A Difference Award, Kentucky Colonel, and the Caesar J. Fiamma” Award from the American Red Cross.  In 2009 I was presented with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety Award.  I was recognized by the Kentucky House of Representatives for my service to the State of Kentucky leading up to several winter storms and severe weather outbreaks.

I am also President of the Shadow Angel Foundation which serves portions of western Kentucky and southern Illinois.

There is a lot of noise on the internet.  A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation.  Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.

My forecast philosophy is simple…

  • Communicate in simple terms
  • To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
  • Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, email, and the blog
  • Minimize the “hype” that you might see on television or through other weather sources
  • Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
