An explanation of what is happening in the atmosphere over the coming day

The main weather story, over the coming days, will be warming temperatures (Friday through Sunday night) and increasing rain chances.
A weak cold front will briefly drop our temperatures Wednesday night and Thursday. Thursday’s high temperatures will remain in the upper 30’s and lower 40’s. Below normal. Normal high temperatures are 46 to 48 degrees. Normal lows are around 28 degrees.
Our first chance for precipitation will arrive late Thursday night or Friday morning over our far western counties of southeast Missouri. Poplar Bluff, MO towards Farmington, MO. Some of the guidance holds the rain off until Friday afternoon and night. Keep that in mind.
Higher rain chances will arrive Friday afternoon and especially Friday night.
Temperatures should be warm enough for all rain. Monitor updates. Some colder temperatures are a possibility over the Ozarks of Missouri and our far northern cities such as Farmington, Missouri and Mt Vernon, Illinois.
A few showers are possible on Saturday, as well.
High temperatures on Saturday will rise into the 50’s.
A stronger cold front will enter our region on Sunday night and Monday morning. At one time it appeared that Christmas day would be wet. Now it appears that most of the rain will hold off until Sunday night and Monday. The timing of the front continues to slow. As a matter of fact, the EC guidance does not bring the front into the region until Monday morning.
Temperatures will rise into the 60’s on Sunday. Temperatures will rise through Sunday night as warm air is pulled northward ahead of the cold front.
A few thunderstorms are possible along the cold front. CAPE levels (energy for storms) is forecast to remain low. The severe weather risk is low. I will continue to monitor this part of the forecast.
Rain will end on Monday afternoon from west to east.
Another chance for showers will arrive next Wednesday or Thursday. Several days to monitor that event.
We may have to wait until January for the colder air to reload and head south again.

My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.

- Minimize the “hype” that you might see on television or through other weather sources
- Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
