Wow.  What a weekend.  I am not sure I can remember such a dramatic cold front in this part of the country.  Some of you experienced temperatures reaching into the middle and upper 70’s on Saturday afternoon.  This morning you were in the teens.  Some locations dropped more than 50 degrees.  Amazing.  A rare event. One for the books.

Temperatures were 6-12 degrees warmer on Saturday than anticipated.  This caused the CAPE numbers to go up.  This is why we had severe weather.  Some areas had golf ball to baseball size hail.  Lone Oak, Kentucky recorded 2.2″ size hail.  New Madrid County, Missouri had nearly baseball size.

I was thinking the severe threat was low (when I mentioned it on Friday).  That quickly changed Saturday morning when I saw temperatures moving into the 70’s.  Had to ramp up fast.

Several tornado warnings were issued.  Numerous severe thunderstorm warnings were issued.

The weather has calmed down.  Now we are dealing with bitterly cold air.

Lows tonight will dip into the single digits to lower teens. Wind chills tonight and Monday morning will range from -5 to 5 above.  COLD!  Kids at the bus stop should have gloves on.  It would not take much time for frost bite to develop.

Dry weather is anticipated through Wednesday.  There has been some on and off hints of precipitation late in the week.  I will monitor trends.  Friday is the time frame to monitor.  EC guidance shows rain.

I am monitoring a series of storm systems.  One of those might hit during Christmas weekend.  Rain?  Storms?  Frozen?  Too soon to know.  We need to closely monitor storm track.  As always, monitor updates.

Check out these 24 hour temperature drops.  Impressive.  That is an understatement.

We have regional radars and local city radars – if a radar does not seem to be updating then try another one. Occasional browsers need their cache cleared. You may also try restarting your browser. That usually fixes the problem. Occasionally we do have a radar go down. That is why I have duplicates. Thus, if one fails then try another one.

If you have any problems then please send me an email beaudodson@usawx.com

Who do you trust for your weather information and who holds them accountable?

I have studied weather in our region since the late 1970’s.  I have 38 years of experience in observing our regions weather patterns.  I hold a Bachelor’s of Science in Geo-sciences with a concentration in Broadcast Meteorology.  I graduated from Mississippi State University.

My resume includes:

Member of the American Meteorological Society.

NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador.

Meteorologist for McCracken County Rescue Squad.  I served from 2005 through 2015
Meteorologist for the McCracken County Rescue Squad 2015-current

I own and operate the Southern Illinois Weather Observatory.

Recipient of the Mark Trail Award, WPSD Six Who Make A Difference Award, Kentucky Colonel, and the Caesar J. Fiamma” Award from the American Red Cross

In 2009 I was presented with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety Award.

Recognized by the Kentucky House of Representatives for my service to the State of Kentucky leading up to several winter storms and severe weather outbreaks.

I am also President of the Shadow Angel Foundation which serves portions of western Kentucky and southern Illinois.

There is a lot of noise on the internet.  A lot of weather maps are posted without explanation.  Over time you should learn who to trust for your weather information.

My forecast philosophy is simple and straight forward.

  • Communicate in simple terms
  • To be as accurate as possible within a reasonable time frame before an event
  • Interact with you on Twitter, Facebook, and the blog
  • Minimize the “hype” that you might see on television or through other weather sources
  • Push you towards utilizing wall-to-wall LOCAL TV coverage during severe weather events
