August 22, 2017: Morning weather update

Tuesday morning Facebook weather update

August 22, 2017

Good morning, everyone.

Some thunderstorms likely today. A few strong storms possible.

I hope you were able to see the total eclipse. I received numerous messages and emails from individuals who were in between the clouds and some from those who had their view blocked by clouds. It was hit and miss.

Today:

A strong cold front will usher in a hint of fall over the coming days. Gone will be the muggy heavy air. Collective cheer? Perhaps from most.

Showers and thunderstorms stretch from southwest Missouri into central Illinois, as of this 6:30 am update.

The band of showers and thunderstorms is moving east, but sliding southeast.

Numerous flash flood warnings have been issued for central Missouri, outside my forecast area.

Before you look at radar and become too excited, much of the precipitation is forecast to weaken and dissipate before moving through our region. Some of it will survive, but the large majority of it may not.

Where storms occur there could be locally heavy rain, strong winds, cloud to ground lightning, and perhaps small hail.

There is a risk for a few storms today to receive severe thunderstorm warnings. Damaging wind is the main concern. Tornado risk is low. Hail risk is low.

The overall risk, at any given location, for severe weather today is low.

Rainfall totals of 0.00″ to 0.50″ are possible today. Bands of 0.50″ to 1.00″ are possible. If thunderstorms train over the same areas then higher totals will occur, of course. Typical summer cold front in that aspect.

Some of you may receive no measurable rainfall. This has been an issue for awhile. The haves and have nots.

Highs today with be tempered because of clouds and precipitation. Most areas will experience 84 to 88 degree readings. Muggy air, so it may feel warmer, at times.

Winds will blow out of the southwest ahead of the front and then turn west behind the front. Winds of 6 to 12 mph with gusts to 18 mph are anticipated. Higher gusts possible along the front and behind the front. Higher gusts with thunderstorms.

Tonight:

The atmosphere will dry out tonight as the front sweeps through the entire area. A few remaining showers and thunderstorms into the evening, but ending from west to east as the night wears on.

If the sky conditions clear, then patchy fog will be possible. Dense in some areas.

We may have a chance for fog over the coming nights, as well. Keep that in mind.

Wednesday through Saturday:

Dry weather is anticipated. Cooler and less humid. Highs will mostly be in the upper 70’s to lower 80’s. Several degrees below normal.

Overnight lows will dip into the 50’s. Just a hint of fall during the overnight and early morning hours. Fresh air. Windows open? Perhaps.

Unfortunately, for those needing rain, it appears this time period will remain dry.

Tropical Formation?

I am monitoring the Gulf of Mexico for a tropical system to move northward into Texas.

This system could bring heavy rain into the lower Mississippi Valley next week. It may make it into our region, but confidence this far out if extremely low.

I will be monitoring trends in the guidance.
